About the workshop:

Learn some basic flamenco stylings through warm up and exercises, and learn to dance a dramatic flamenco-bellydance fusion choreography set to "Msafer" by Mohammed Abdel Wahab

Topics include:
- brief introduction to the historical connection of the two dance forms.
- training the body to switch from flamenco to bellydance.
- feeling the difference in muscle usage between flamenco and bellydance.

Students will need a fan that opens and closes with control, a wide skirt (heavier the better), and heeled pair of dance or street shoes for light, basic footwork. Limited fans will be available for use.

About the instructor:

JULIA CHA is a bellydance performer and instructor based in North Vancouver, BC. She has been dancing professionally since 2006, and started teaching regularly in 2009. Her professional bellydance career began when she finished an intense Professional Training Program with Gada Kanaan in Santiago, Chile (www.gada.cl) in 2005, where she had the opportunity to dance in theatre and television as part of the Corps De Ballet Gada Kanaan. She is grateful to have been mentored by Sarita Mileta (Vancouver), Rahma Haddad (Vancouver), and Badia Star (Toronto). As a strong believer in lifelong learning, she continues to study in workshops with renowned bellydance instructors around the world.

Julia started studying flamenco while she was studying intensively with Miss Gada Kanaan. She attended Academia Luna Calé and studied with Paola Peñailillo. She currently studies flamenco intensively at Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy in Vancouver, BC, under the direction of Kasandra Lea and Oscar Nieto. Julia combines her knowledge in classical ballet, bellydance, flamenco, and her interest in teaching and learning techniques, to bring out the best in her students. October Intensive Update

Hey guys,

Spaces are still available for my intensive October 23rd-25th. I've extended
the early bird price of $240 for all 3 days until October 16th. After that you
will have to pay the 1/2 day price of $45, or $90/day.

I would also like to clarify what will be taught. I pulled the workshop
together to capture pretty much everything that I knew I wasn't going to get
around to in weekly classes, with a hefty dose of drilling. Here's a
clarification of how the individual sections differ from my weekly classes:

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
These are pretty much the only section where there will be some overlap with my
Technique classes, but of course, we will be doing so much more drilling than we
could possibly fit in in a 75 min class. More variations, different speeds, and
lots of sweating. I will also be going into detail about the flexibility
training method that I use. I will be explaining the biomechanical reasons why
and how it works, how it was developed, and how to apply it to different
stretches. This will not be covered in any weekly classes.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
This workshop is geared towards more intermediate and advanced dancers - those
who either want to start choreographing or who want to improve their existing
choreography skills. This will include exercises, demonstrations, discussion,
brainstorming, and a LOT of personal feedback.

3-5: Flapper fusion
I will be teaching "That's a Plenty," the fast section from my performance at
Tribal Fest 2008:

I have not taught this choreography before and will not be teaching it during
weekly classes.

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and
bellydancifying your funk.
"We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory
effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit,
breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves
inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are
commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and
locking."

Although some of these concepts are referenced in weekly classes, and some
individual moves may be used, I simply do not have time in 60 min to break them
down and explain the differences systematically. Funk dance styles are very
confusing, mislabeled, overlapping, and rarely taught in clear, safe, muscular
basis. This workshop is an attempt to rectify that.

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
I will be incorporating elements of my yoga practice to create exercises to
improve and practice balance. We will also be drilling moves EXTREMELY slowly,
think eighth or sixteenth time.

I would also like to add that this may be a one time opportunity to take this
workshop. At this point, I have no plans to repeat this workshop, and, may not
be able to continue weekly classes. So, that being said, if you are interested,
I recommend taking advantage of it now.

Rosanna returns to Southern Ontario after spending 2 years studying and performing in San Francisco. There, she studied with a who’s who of bellydance: Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, FCBD, Jill Parker, Zoe Jakes, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Cera Byer, and Amy Sigil. In California, Rosanna also had the opprtunity to expand her movement repertoire outside of bellydance and into vinyasa yoga, breakdance, house, and locking. Cofounder of the Raw Soul and a regular at underground house jams put on by Nine, Boogie Inc. and Bounce. Gerard has been djing for 16 years of his life, learning and being inspired by Toronto locals as well as visiting stars like Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. Gerard has also played the Harvest Festival, Promise Cherry Beach parties, Circa and Footwork, to name just a few of his musical appearances and milestones.

Sweatin' to the not-so-oldies: Classes with Rosanna!

STARTING NEXT WEEK!!!

Since I'm now north of the border, time to offer some classes! I'm offering technique classes separate from combo classes. This way dancers from any style can come and refine their technique and build stamina. Fusion combos is my own application of bellydance technique in crazy wonderful ways. Music and choreography will be extremely non-traditional.

I will also have some select goodies for sale(new, second hand, and hand made), some from SF and some from my closet.

Starts September 23rd at Aurora Live Studios 392 Queen Street E., Toronto (N. Side of Queen St.- 1 Block East of Parliament St.). We will be in the downstairs studio.

PLEASE - take off your shoes immediately when you enter upstairs. If there's a class in session, proceed quietly to the back of the studio to get to the stairs.

Wednesdays
6-715: Technique - All technique classes will be multi-level, with
different options given for each level. Students will be encouraged
to work at and push their own level with beginners focussing on
execution of single movements and more advanced students working on
speed, footwork, and layering. These classes will be geared to
drilling technique used accross bellydance styles. Please be prepared to sweat (towel, water bottle). Bring a yoga mat if desired.

More beginner students are encouraged to come to this class (but all levels will be
catered to).

715-830: Technique - Follows same format as earlier class, but with
different drills and variations.

830-930: Fusion combos - Fusion combos will primarily be hip
hop-bellydance fusion stuff (but may be something completely different...) and is geared towards people with prior bellydance and/or hip hop background. It will be dance-y dance-y and not drill-y drill-y.

Thursdays
6-7: Fusion combos

7-815: Technique

815-9: Stretching and Flexibility - Led stretching sequences to
improve flexibility. This class is meant to complement the work done
in the prior technique classes, ironing out tight muscles for the
weekend. Students are therefore encouraged to come to both. Please bring any yoga props (mat, blocks, strap).

Prices (cash or check only, can paypal in advance)
Technique (75 minutes) $15
Fusion combos (60) $12
Stretching and flexibility (45) $5 with previous class, $10 otherwise
(MUST come in warmed up)

Currently I'm not offering class cards. I'm not able to guarantee the
continuation of classes over the long term, so only drop ins are
available. If there is sufficient demand, I will offer longer term
packages.

Intensive with Rosanna/Cleoflaptra

As some of you may already know, I'm moving back to the great white north in September. Since its been SOOO long since I've either taught or performed in Toronto and I've done SOOO much since I've been in San Fran, I've decided to pull together an extravaganza eleganza of dance madness. I'm packing in as much as possible into 3 days of teaching, as well as throwing a party with performances by moi, and beats courtesy of 2 of my favourite DJs, Nick McAlister and Gerard Valdez.

The details of the workshop have been sorted out and the schedule is as follows:

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

Yay, i'm holding another workshop this summer, in Vancouver BC!! ... and this time it is Tribal Fusion Choreography!!

I'll be doing a brand new piece that is blended with some Odissi-inspired movements - something I haven't done for a while, and miss very much!! ... and we'll still keep some of the fluid movement we had going last month at the Liquid Lava Moves workshop - now fusing things together for music interpretation! this is one of my fave things to do - can't wait!

Sahra Saeeda Kent, renowned teacher, superb dancer and respected dance ethnographer in a weeklong series of performances, workshops and Journey Through Egypt Level 1 certifying course. Sahra is sure to delight with her lucid and experienced teaching techniques and her dazzlingly lovely dancing. We are pleased to host her in the great plains of the True North!

Journey Through Egypt Gala Show takes place Sept. 1, doors at 7:30, show at 8 pm, with dancers from across Canada presenting Egyptian sub-styles, including Saidi, melayya, assaya, baladi, and stylings of great stars such as Tahia Carioca, Souhair Zaki, and Fifi Abdo. Tickets are available in advance at Au Set Belly Dance, 1045 St. James at Ellice, or through your registration in the workshops. JtE 1 will be Sept. 4-6 (20 hours total) and is 60% sold out. Drumming workshop this Sunday!

This is just a reminder that myself and Tim Gerwing, Harem's drummer, will be teaching a drumming workshop this Sunday at Ammara Dance Studio in New Westminster. This is the first of 2 workshops focusing on drumming and dancing. You can take either one or both. Hope to see you there!

These workshops are for drummers and dancers alike! No drumming experience is necessary. Over the four hours, you will learn: how to read Arabic rhythms, essential rhythms for Arabic music, how to dance to each rhythm, how to compose a drum solo, and how drummers and dancers work together to create a dynamic performance. This is a rare opportunity for dancers to study with an experienced LIVE drummer so don't miss out!
NOTE: Please bring your own drum - if you require one, please email info@ammara.ca no later than one week prior to class to make arrangements for rental.

Working/dancing in Turkey

I spent 7 weeks in Turkey recently and I have been so inspired by it in everyway! Contrary to what people think, there are not tons of bellydancing happening in Turkey as one may think. Talking to the locals, I found out that they are not as crazy about Raks Sharqi as we think. I saw some amazing dancers there during shows and restaurants. I also noticed that more foreign dancers seem to work in resort towns certain months during the year when tourism is quite high there.

I have been thinking more and more about moving to Turkey or a place similar. Wondring if anyone has worked/danced there and if so, what your experience has been like? What did you like or didn't like? any feedback would be great!

Dancing with the veil is an important element in oriental style bellydance. Along with the finger cymbals, it is one of the most important and commonly used dance props. It is an excellent learning tool to work the arms and further develop grace, and to capture the powerfully feminine yet ethereal essence of oriental dance. Learn to use the veil to frame the body, accentuate moves, and create beautiful effects. Learn the difference between different fabrics, and how they create different effects and feelings. Limited number of veils will be provided.

Class breakdown - 1 hour warm-up and basic technique, 1 hour of combination and veil work.

INTRO TO THE ART OF DRUM SOLO, with LIVE DRUMMER

Hagallah workshop this Sunday!

Just a reminder that my Hagallah workshop will be this Sunday, 2-4pm at Studio 505 in Vancouver - hosted by Vancouver Bellydance.

Hagallah is a cute and sassy dance that spread from Libya to the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt, this dance was performed as a coming of age rite for young women and at weddings. Discover more about this dance form and its history, while learning a short and fun choreography that includes using scarves as props (this technique can be applicable to other forms of dance or fusion as well!). Please bring two light scarves approximately 1.5ft x 1.5ft. A limited number of scarves will be available for practice.

This lithe and beautiful young lady has studied Middle Eastern dance for 15 years, and has been an instuctor for 9 years. She has been one of Vancouver’s most sought after Middle Eastern dance performers for almost 10 years, performing every weekend at various venues and events as well as television appearances and theatre productions. All of these I've made for myself and liked them so much I figured someone else might want them too! Less than 3 will ever be made in these fabrics, so once they're gone, they're gone.

MUST READ: Licensing for music

SOCAN - Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada

IMPORTANT - A law has been passed that enables SOCAN to charge all dance and fitness teachers and dance schools to pay licensing fees to be able to use prerecorded music from anywhere in the world in their classes.

If a school pays, it covers the teachers who teaches for that school but not outside. For a freelance teacher, it will probably run about $64.00 a year.

Schools can be in the thousands of dollars. I have been involved in many discussions with SOCAN and Dance Ontario
who has been advocating on our (dance community) behalf for them to more lenient. They are going after big schools right now but very soon will try and get everyone even teaching in the Church basement. They say they will be sending spies into classes to catch teachers in the act who do not have a license.

After Dec.2, full details will be available but I am just giving you a heads up. It is because you as a teacher are benefitting from the hard work and creation of another artist, so the same way you pay for these rights in performance, you will now have to pay in class.

This is a world wide movement so it is not going away. Yes, it applies to Egyptian music but not to music created over 50 years ago. Live drummers improvising and piano players who play Bach are obviously except.

The fees will probably be based on numbers of students. Sorry, for the bad news but on the other had I guess we do want to support other artists.

Typical rates in Nova Scotia?

I have just recently moved to Nova Scotia and I am unfamiliar with what the local going rates for gigs are. I have been asked to dance a 20-30 minute set at a wedding three hours away from where I live. What are the typical rates here for weddings, (I also want to factor in a little for travel time)? The best info I could find was that in Ottowa, Ontario weddings are $225-$250. Is that standard for Nova Scotia as well? I don't want to undercut or over shoot! Thanks for any advice.

10-12:30pm - Modern Egyptian Combos and Choreo
"Lean new and fun Egyptian moves to incorporate into your own dancing. Technique and drills and stylization discussion and exploration, plus choreography. It's earthy, sassy, and so much fun!"

12:30-1:30 - Lunch (provided)

1:30-3:30pm - Lebanese Stylization
"Technique drills and combinations for Lebanese stylization, a form known for its subtlety and complex musicality. Aubre will also discuss posture and form differences of Lebanese versus Egyptian stylization."

10-12:30 - Jazz Fosse Fusion
"Learn how to incorporate the lyrical line of jazz with the subtle quality of bellydance. Including fun combinations based on Fosse's sexy and strong style."

"Working with 6/8 and Moroccan Shikat folkdance, Aubre will teach a challenging and fun combo with sagat. Technique drills and music and regional discussion. Finger cymbals optional."

Well, I'm in Montreal all now, living in the Plateau. Lauri Boivin has been very kind to show me around a bit.

I'm hoping to set up a beginner class or two if anyone knows a community centre looking for teachers or areas that aren't too close to other people's classes.

Also could people please tell me about upcoming events, student nights, etc.? (I know August is a dead time for events).
I'd love to attend/volunteer & meet some more of the local dance community!

Looking for class for June 16-20

Hey all--

I'm a bellydancer from Houston, Tx, and work will be sending me to Montreal next week for some training at the Canadian Space Agency in St. Hubert. I'll be staying in Longueuil, on a Metro stop. I'll also have a car available to me, but I'd prefer to use the Metro as much as possible. :-)

I would like to take a bellydance class or two while I'm there. I teach beginner and intermediate technique classes here in the Houston area. I would love to take an advanced technique class if anyone knows of one.

But then again, I'd love to take a beginner or intermediate technique or combos class to see how other people teach.

If you have any suggestions, either post here, or send me a message through tribe.

Thanks so much!!

(Oh, and my French is rudimentary at best...I can meet, greet, and eat using my French...but that's about as far as I got in teaching myself. So, I would do better with an English speaking or bi-lingual instructor. Thanks again!!)

I'm back in Canada, with my Indian Style Belly Dance Silk Gypsy Costumes

Hi! I'm back in Nouveau Brunswick for another month, until my move to NYC.
I've started designing belly dance Indian Gypsy style silk and sequin saree costumes on my last trip to India. I'm in green modelling with 3 of my students. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the process... from noisy smelly rickshaw rides to vibrant intense immense crowded markets to the sensory overload of rooms overflowing with sequins and silk fabrics and working with my wonderful tailor Ganu. I go mack to India in October 2008 and the plan is to make many more, with different designs. I'd love your feedback about them!

Known in the past as Travelers, Tinkers, and Gypsies, the people who collectively call themselves Roma have left their mark on culture, and have been impacted by the societies around them while still maintaining their identities. Come and learn dance movements from the Roma migrations as well as build cultural knowledge and increase your dance repertoire. Authentic movements from Rajasthan, Turkey, the Balkans, as well several other areas will be covered. Please be sure to bring along your finger cymbals/zills. Bring a touch of darkness to your July
Kick of the summer with a workshop in the most exciting and innovative style of belly dance by Toronto's foremost practitioner of the art.
Tribal fusion belly dance is often referred to as the darker side of cabaret. In this nine hour intensive with Audra, you'll learn the posture, movements and attitude that creates this stunning style. Isolations will be taught through demonstration and verbal breakdown in Audra's comprehensive and easy to follow format. The isolations will also be strung together into combinations and eventually into a complete dance to great music by the end of the intensive.
Each intensive is different, offering a focus on different movements & isolations as well as its own choreography.

Black session open to new students & those in Basic Black level at The Dark Side Studio

When: Sunday July 6th
Time: 10 am - 3 pm (1 hr lunch break) ***please note time change***
Where: CONFIDANCE 107 - 1320 Kingsway Ave, Port Coquitlam BC (20 minutes east from Vancouver)

Intended to build from Moria's Fundamentals Workshop, this workshop puts together the various drills and traveling patterns previously learned to build control and stamina in layering.
Drills teach how to maintain deliciously crisp isolations while layering 2,3, or 4 different components of fundamental moves.
Prior isolation training is helpful but all levels are welcome. Some of the more advanced components of this workshop include using turns, traveling, and layering movements to culminate in new advanced combinations that we will work together into an tribal fusion choreography.
Hour 1: Lower Body Emphasis--sharp and staccato articulation emphasizing movement and rhythm. We will drill twists and pelvic locks working to develop the muscles in the lower abs and pelvic area to create crisp, strong hip articulation. Movement across the floor and around the room and drills to increase flexibility and range of motion in the hip while maintaining strong posture and arms.
Hour 2: Upper Body Emphasis--round and smooth articulation emphasizing shapes and fluidity with upper body extension and articulation. Drills to sharpen and intensify chest ticks and locks while maintaining perfect arm and shoulder placement. Arms, undulations and laybacks will also be drilled as well as creating unusual shapes with the body.
Hour 3: Floorwork and flexibility will be taught and woven into the previous components of hip articulation and upper body strength.
Hour 4: Exquisitely slow and intense combinations culminate in a serpentine slow choreography incorporating level changes, floor patterns, and deep movement.
Comfortable, stretchy clothes, water, a yoga mat, and a notebook are suggested but not required. Knee pads are highly suggested.

ABOUT MORIA: Morias enigmatic stage presence is born from a history of training in San Francisco bellydance technique that combines the Salimpour method, stylization from The Indigo, and Fat Chance posturing. Remembering her mothers early practice of bellydance, her fathers study of yoga, and from what later became a background of classical dance and theatre in her youth, Moria was moved to exclusively study bellydance after graduating Magne Cum Laude from the University of California, Irvine. Inspired by the spirit of bellydance as it allows for the organic and gypsy nature of life to move serpentine through space, her personal fusion of circus art, theatre make-up, and rich costuming brings a grace and elegance to tribal bellydance that evokes the majestic. She has performed music and dance in collaboration with Suhaila and Jamilla Salimpour via Bal Anat and The Suhaila Dance Company; with Ziah Ali via Awalim; and currently with Rachel Brice and Sharon Kihara via The Bellydance Superstars. Moria performs and teaches internationally and is well loved within the bellydance community and beyond.

Venus is moving to Montreal

Hello fellow dancers!

I've been teaching in performing in Vancouver for about 24 years and will be moving to Montreal this summer to start my Masters in Kinesiology at McGill. I did a directed studies project on bellydance as part of my undergrad degree at SFU. We hooked me up to electrodes to record muscle activity during bellydance moves, doing motion capture at the same time. I will be pursuing more research on bellydance and other complex, multisegmental movement skills. My professor at SFU got a job as chair of the dept. at McGill so I and 2 other students are following him out there.

I hope to do some teaching and performing to help pay expenses. . .can anyone give me any suggestions as to locations and venues where there is a demand for instructors or performers that is currently not being filled?

I teach beginner to advanced classes here at community centres and private studios and have a performing group of advanced students--I love to make group choreographies and put on big student stage shows. I also offer a comprehensive 21-hour Instructor Training course, and am planning some shorter course on functional anatomy, basic biomechanics, movement analysis and motor learning for dancers and instructors wishing to deepen their knowledge and enhance their technical and teaching skills.

Last November I filmed a 20 episode TV series created by our local multicultural station, channel M Multivision, called "Bellydance workout with Venus". I have an article about the experience on Gilded Serpent if you'd like to read it.

Anyway, if any of you have any suggestions/advice for a new teacher/dancer in town, please PM me.

I hope to start attending bellydance events there and making new friends!

I'll also be looking for an apartment in the Plateau or Latin Quarter if anyone has any leads.

I am VERY pleased to formally announce that Ammara Dance Studio, located at 40 Sixth St in New Westminster, BC, is officially up, running and open for business!

Formerly Masabo Dance, Ammara Dance Company will continue the Masabo tradition of being a main center for West African Dance and drumming, continuing to offer classes with Internationally renowned performers and artists. In addition, we are offering Brazilian Capoeira, and we have added even more Belly Dance classes, fitness classes, and next month we begin our Yoga classes! Spread the news! :)

Ammara is now open for on-line registration and will be open starting tomorrow for in-person registration. Website is always being updated with new and exciting classes so check back often. Ammara offers all types of classes for ALL ages, there is something here for everyone! (And if there is a class you want to take that we don't offer, let me know and I'll see what I can do!)

Ammara Dance Studio is also available for rental during times when there are no classes scheduled.
